Academic mobility is more common today than ever before. However, for those who wish to study abroad, the process of homologating your high school diploma can be complicated and confusing depending on your country of origin. In this article, we will explore in depth what exactly this process entails, why it is essential and how Academia Guiu can help you through this laborious process, making it simple and hassle-free.

What is the homologation and why is it important?

The homologation is a necessary procedure to validate a foreign diploma in Spain and bring it into line with the educational system of the country. In order to be able to study a university degree in Spain, it is necessary to demonstrate that you have an adequate educational background and that you have obtained the homologation of your diploma… Does it sound complicated? Don’t worry! At Academia Guiu we will make the process easier for you to avoid any unforeseen circumstances.

How does the diploma homologation process work in Spain?

If you are a Guiu student, you will have to legalize and apostille your diploma and grades from the last 3 years of high school in your country of origin. Once you have all the documentation, you must make an appointment with our delegates (either online or in person) to validate the documentation. You will also have to pay the corresponding fee (69,65€ as of April 2024). Once you have completed these three steps:

If you are studying with us online, you must request a video call with one of our homologation delegates. They will verify your documents and once you have everything approved, you will be able to go to the Spanish consulate or embassy in your country to receive the VOLANTE OF THE HOMOLOGATION.

If you are studying with us on-site, come with your documents to the International Department and meet with one of our homologation delegates. They will verify your documents and tell you the steps to follow. Remember that if you do this procedure in Spain you must add your CENSUS REGISTRATION (Empadronamiento, in Spanish) to the documentation you submit.

How long does the process of homologation of diplomas take in Spain?

The process of homologation of diplomas in Spain can be a lengthy procedure that can take between 6 months up to 1 year to complete, depending on the complexity of the case and the documentation to be submitted. The Ministry is responsible for evaluating and granting the homologation of high school diplomas obtained abroad in Spain.

This process involves the legalization and authentication of the original documents, as well as their sworn translation into Spanish.

The steps for the homologation of a foreign high school degree in Spain are: legalization, certification, sworn translation into Spanish, accreditation of authorization to practice regulated professions and payment of the fee. Subsequently, the homologation must be requested, the equivalence must be processed and the resolution must be received.

How can we know if a subject is going to be considered by the Ministry as Literature, Mathematics or History?

It will be the Ministry itself that will be able to provide this information throughout the process.

What are the deadlines I have to meet?

All Guiu students are REQUIRED to submit the above mentioned documents no later than 90 days after the start of the Pathway course they are attending.

Remember that the sooner you submit them the better! Fewer unforeseen events, fewer surprises.
