Practical aspects to live in Barcelona and study at the academy

There are 3 types of housing available for students who wish to come to Barcelona.

Residences: Residences are the safest options for students. They are usually stays of medium or long duration (from 6 months to 1 year). The monthly cost of the residences ranges from € 700 to € 1200 per month, depending on the distance from the center of the city, the type of room (individual, shared or double), and the services you need (pension, parking, gym,...).

Rooms: You can find rooms for rent in shared flats with families or students. Prices can range from € 400 per month (depending on whether it is single, shared or double, as well as the location of the house).

Apartments: You can rent an apartment from 750 € per month, without expenses included (for this option, it is necessary to consider the fact that the supplies will not be included in the price, nor the expenses of contract management and in some cases, it will not be furnished).

The documents requested by the embassy may vary depending on the country in which you request it and on the expected duration of the course. Remember that one of the requirements is to present the certificate and the invitation that the Guiu Academy will give you once you enroll. Vote: it is possible to vote for the elections in your country. You should only be present at the consulate or Embassy of your country, along with your personal identification.

Payments:  remember that Spain uses the EURO currency (€), valid for any country within the European community; although you can pay in virtually any establishment with debit or credit card. Check with your bank which card will benefit you most if you make a payment..

Bank Accounts: once you arrive in the country, you can go to the bank of your choice, and open a bank account with your passport number. Once you obtain your NIE, you can make the identification change in the bank. If you need help or advice, do not hesitate to ask us.

Cost of living: remember that without counting the amount you invest in the accommodation, the shopping basket will range between € 100 and € 300 per month per student (depending on the type of diet you make) and that monthly public transport will cost around 50 € aproximately.

Hand luggage: before traveling, remember to have in your handbag:

  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Travel tickets
  • Prescription medicines
  • Cash (for emergencies or taxi trips)
  • Any official documentation you need for your studies (insurance policies, apostille medical certificate, apostille criminal record, national identification, apostille notes)

Remember that each country has its own customs, so here are a few:

Routines / schedules: life on the streets of Barcelona starts at 9:00, like your studies. The usual meal schedule ranges from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm; and dinner times between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Diet: Mediterranean diet. This diet, considered one of the healthiest, is based on the variety of colors, obtained through vegetables, fruits, meats and fishes, decorated with assorted legumes and seasoned with olive oils and vinegars. The average price of the menu in a restaurant is 12 € (2 or 3 courses, dessert and drink).

Where to buy: you will find food centers in every street. Deciding where to buy will be up to you. Remember that the monthly shopping basket will have an average price of € 150; Or if you prefer, you can eat at any restaurant in the city, the varied daily menu, based on the local diet.

Facilities: the city is constantly modernized. The constant movement of tourism has defined Barcelona as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Spain an the world. You can enjoy modern centers, equipped with the latest technology, to centers set in the 60s and even theme centers.

Transportation:  traveling around the city is much simpler than you think; The whole city is communicated by public transport. You can reach any corner of the city using train, metro, bus and / or tram. Being public mobility, you can move by any method buying the transport card (approximately € 50 per month with unlimited trips). If you are one of those who prefer private, quiet transport, there is a large network of taxis in the city and they are very easy to access.  

Leisure: if you want to know where to enjoy the city by day, you can move around the large shopping centers that you will find throughout the city; some of them with 5 *. You can also enjoy cinemas, bowling, recreational games, skyting, figure skating, ... and any activity you want. If you fancy nightlife, the city is alive at night. There are thousands of night spots where you can enjoy safe and cheerful environments. For you to have notions of the price, going to the cinema will cost you around € 7 for the entrance and go for a cocktail for around € 6 per night.
